What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you choose to fill out our contact form, personal information including your name, email address and IP address are collected and stored with the contact information.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Some forms on this site require the use of Google’s reCAPTCHA service before they can be submitted. If you consent to this service, a cookie is created that stores your consent. This cookie deletes itself after thirty days. A cookie named “itsec_interstitial_browser” is created to track a user’s login process to implement enhanced security features.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. We also retain some cookie data for 30 days, such as the pages your IP address visited on this website.

The IP address of visitors, user ID of logged in users, and username of login attempts are conditionally logged to check for malicious activity and to protect the site from specific kinds of attacks. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, log out requests, requests for suspicious URLs, changes to site content, and password updates. This information is retained for 60 days.

Security logs are retained for 60 days.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

How we protect your data

We do not share your personal data with any third party. Our website administrators and their staff do have access to your personal information, but do so under the express agreement that they do not copy or use that information in any way. Our website utilizes high quality security software to add security features not normally associated with WordPress. We update the theme, WordPress software and plugins on a regular basis to minimize the risk of malware. 

This site is scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by the SolidWP Site Scanner and Blogvault. We do not send personal information to the scanner; however, the scanner could find personal information posted publicly (such as in comments) during the scan.

In order to ensure file integrity, Solid Security pulls data from wordpress.org, solidwp.com, ithemes.com and amazonaws.com. No personal data is sent to these sites. Requests to wordpress.org include the WordPress version, the site’s locale, a list of installed plugins, and a list of each plugin’s version. What data breach procedures we have in place

If the site is breached by malware, our website administrative vendor is notified and is under contract to remove such malware and reset all passwords.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

We do no user-specific profiling with user data. IP addresses are used in a collective way to evaluate the popularity of pages on our site so that we can make better business decisions. This information is generic in nature and not associated with any specific entity visiting our website. None of the specific user data collected by our site is used in any way other than to contact people who specifically requested to be contacted, such as those filling out our contact form or requesting to be on our email newsletter.
